Experience Thai Culture and Fun in a Splash of Color!
As we welcome the month of April, we at Royal YUM are preparing to celebrate one of Thailand's most vibrant and water-filled festivals - Songkran! πΉππ¦
The Origins of Songkran
Songkran, also known as the Thai New Year, is an ancient festival celebrated in Thailand from April 13th to 15th. Traditionally, this joyous occasion marks the end of the dry season and the beginning of the rainy season. In Sanskrit, the word "Songkran" means "passage" or "transition," symbolizing the sun's journey into the Aries zodiac sign.
This three-day celebration is all about cleansing and purification. In the olden days, Thais would gently pour scented water over Buddha statues to cleanse them and bring good fortune. They also believed that splashing water on each other would wash away bad luck and misfortunes from the previous year. Today, Songkran has transformed into a massive water fight where people roam the streets, armed with water guns, buckets, and hoses, drenching one another in good-natured fun!
